Somy was born on 25 March 1976 to Tehmina, an Iraqi woman, and Madan, a Pakistani man in Karachi, Pakistan. Her childhood was a traumatic time with her and her brother witnessing domestic violence at the hands of their father. She was physically abused as a child of 5 and 9 years by her househelp. She later moved to Florida with her mother and brother, where she was raped at the age of 14 by a 17-year-old boy in a park.
The incident led her to drop out of school and move to the city of dreams in India to meet Salman Khan.
In her tender teen years, she started working as a model and was quick to receive Hindi film projects. She was a part of as many as ten Bollywood films between the years 1991 and 1998 and also worked as a leading lady in some.
Her filmography began in 1993 with ‘Krishna Avatar’, followed by ‘Anth’, Yaar Gadadr, Teesra Kaun, Aao Pyaar Karen, Andolan, and Mafia, Chhup.

In 1991, Ali started dating Salman Khan. The relationship went on for young years before it came to an ugly end with Somy Ali accusing him of verbal and physical abuse. This was the foundational block for her NGO No More Tears. Her split with Salman Khan led her to the United States, where she learned and made films.
