AFCAT AFSB Interview Preparation Tips:

There are three branches of the National Defence Academy (NDA) which are: the Indian Armed Forces, Indian Naval Academy, and Indian Air Force. The Indian Air Force to admit candidates into Indian Air Force conducts an entrance exam known as the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT). While this AFCAT Exam is further divided into 3 stages which includes the first stage as an Online written test, the second stage is the AFSB interview and the final stage in the selection process of the AFCAT exam is the medical screening test.

And in this article, we will walk through different stages of the AFSB Interview and how to prepare for the same.

The AFCAT AFSB Interview which is also known as Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) Interview, is a common interview conducted by the Indian Air Force for the candidates who have successfully managed to clear the AFCAT written exam.

The main motive to conduct the AFCAT AFSB exam is to test the mental and physical strength of the candidates, which helps in deciding whether a particular candidate is suitable to further join the Indian Air Force or not. The AFSB Interview is further divided into many group tasks and Psychological tests.

Stage 1 of the AFSB Interview witnesses activities such as the OIR and PPDT test. The OIR test stands for Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test and the PP&DT test stands for Picture Perception and Discussion Test.

  • Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test:

The OIR test is conducted in the offline mode and comprises 50-55 question related to verbal and non-verbal reasoning. The OIR test analyses the candidate’s basic knowledge. The OIR Test basically tests the mental aptitude and are on a scale of 1 to 5 as per the Officer Intelligence Rating.

  • Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT):

After facing the basic knowledge test, the Picture Perception and Description Test focuses on testing the basic psychology, confidence and behaviour of the candidate in a social environment. The PPDT test usually is divided into 3 sections which are:

  1. Story Writing
  2. Narration
  3. Group Discussion

During the Picture Perception Test of the AFSB Interview, candidates are shown a hazy picture which they have to perceive the picture within 30 seconds. After this, the candidates are directed to write a story based on the picture they perceived on the basis of the number of characters shown in the picture, the gender of the characters shown in the picture and also the age and mood shown in the picture. The candidates are given 4 minutes to write the story based on the picture.

After writing the story, candidates are required to narrate the story they have written within 1 minute while addressing the group. After the individual narration, the candidates in a group discussion have to thread a common story from different stories narrated by each candidate. And during these tasks, every candidate’s performance is assessed on the basis of a person’s group abilities, individual abilities and individual intelligence skills.

The results of the AFSB OIR and PPDT tests are declared at the end of the day, and the candidates who managed to clear Stage 1 of the AFSB Interview including OIR and PPDT tests are promoted to further rounds. While the students who fail in the OIR and PPDT tests are sent back home.
