Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Air India flight AI171 took a tragic turn when it crashed a few moments after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport, claiming the lives of hundreds on board and on the ground. The catastrophic event turned all the lights on the man behind the airlines, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson, who reacted to the tragedy after some time.
In a video, addressing the scale and intensity of the crash, Campbell Wilson called it a “difficult day”. His video message said, “This is a difficult day for all of us at Air India, and our efforts now are focused entirely on the needs of our passengers, crew members, their families, and loved ones. I know that there are many questions, and at this stage, I won’t be able to answer all of them.”
He further shared the information of people on board and the fatal impact they met, “Air India flight AI 171, operating with a Boeing 787-8 aircraft, travelling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, has been involved in an accident after take-off. Flight AI171 was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members onboard the aircraft. Of the passengers, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national, and 7 are Portuguese nationals. The injured passengers have been taken by local authorities to the nearest hospitals…We are actively working with the authorities on emergency response efforts. A special team of caregivers from Air India will soon be on their way to Ahmedabad to provide additional support.”
The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India since 16 June 2022, Campbell Wilson, has been the founding member of the low-cost airline Scoot, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines. He took the reins of Scoot as CEO in 2011.
On 15 June 2022, he took the post of CEO and MD of Air India, after the airline was bought by the Tata Group in the same year.
