Causes of Arthritis

To understand the causes of Arthritis, you have to understand the two different ways the disease attacks the body. The two kinds of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, which is the most commonly found arthritis, is caused by the wear-and-tear damage to a joint's cartilage.  In this state, a hard, slick coating is formed on the ends of bones where there is a joint. Cartilage cushions the ends of the bones and allows nearly frictionless joint motion, due to which the patient experiences pain and also restricted movement. This can happen in a sudden injury or due to lifestyle, it can be caused over years.

Osteoarthritis can also be caused by any changes in the bones or deterioration of the connective tissues.

If cartilage in a joint is severely damaged, the joint lining may become inflamed and swollen.

Rheumatoid arthritis

In rheumatoid arthritis, the lining of the joint capsule is attacked by the immune system. The lining of the joint capsule is a tough membrane in the body which encloses all the joint parts. This lining, which is also called synovial membrane, gets inflammation and swollen. .
