If you unknowingly travel without a ticket by train, then this mistake may cost you dearly, because the Railways have been continuously showing strictness on passengers without tickets. This can be gauged from the fact that in the last year only 3 ticket checking staff of the country have recovered a fine of 1-1 crore. This is only the amount recovered from unauthorized passengers between 1 April 2022 to 16 March 2023 by three ticket-checking staff of the Chennai Railway Division.
According to a railway press release, Deputy Chief Ticket Inspector S Nand Kumar collected Rs 1.55 crore by imposing fines in 27,787 cases of travelling without proper tickets and without booked luggage. This is one of the highest earnings of any ticket-checking staff to date.
Chief ticket inspector Roseline Arokia Mary also achieved a milestone by collecting Rs 1.03 crore in penalties, making her the highest-paid female ticket-checking employee in Indian Railways.Besides this, Senior Ticket Examiner Sakthivel collected Rs 1.10 crore as fine. In a statement, the Railways appreciated the staff and appealed to passengers to travel with proper tickets.
