Azaad to Lahore 1947: Bollywood’s Highly Anticipated Period Drama Films Releasing in 2024-25
Upcoming Period Drama Films: The new year awaits the release of many highly anticipated movies slated to hit theaters in 2025. Period drama as a genre will be flourishing this year too with numerous period films ready to amaze their audience. From Ajay Devgn’s ‘Azaad’ to Sunny Deol’s ‘Lahore 1947’ here is a list of highly anticipated period drama films releasing in 2024-25.
Chhaava
Vicky Kaushal will be seen in a never-before-seen avatar as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film is directed by Laxman Utekar with Rashmika Mandanna as the female lead. Maddock Films of Dinesh Vijen is bankrolling the film set to release on 6 December 2024.
Azaad
Ajay Devgan introduces his nephew Aaman Devgan and daughter of Raveena Tandon, Rasha Thadani in the period drama film ‘Azaad’, a tale of a loyal horse that was a companion of Maharana Pratap himself. The film is helmed by Kai Po Che famed Abhishek Kapoor, under the banner of RSVP and Guy In The Sky Pictures of Ronnie Screwvala and Pragya Kapoor. No tentative date is yet confirmed but the film will be released in January 2025 as per the teaser.

Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues
The legend of Ashwathama goes with the belief that the immortal warrior from the Mahabharata will live forever as a part of the curse from Krishna. The mythology will meet celluloid with Shahid Kapoor-led period drama. The film is backed by Pooja Entertainment of Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani, and Deepshika Deshmukh.
Lahore 1947
Deemed as the cinematic event of the year, Lahore 1947 is set in the era of Independence dwelling on the aftermath of the horrific event in India and its new neighbor. Starring Sunny Deol, Aamir Khan, and Preity Zinta in the major cast, the film is helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi. A grand train scene shot in the film made several headlines after the film wrapped.
