Baby John on OTT: Varun Dhawan had high hopes for his latest theatrical bummer Baby John to redefine him on screen as an action hero beyond his stereotypical image of a comic or romantic hero. The film was released in theaters on 5 December 2024 with much anticipation but failed to gain the expected traction. After its run on the silver screen, Baby John has dropped on an OTT platform but it's not as simple as it sounds.
Baby John officially started streaming on Amazon Prime Video on 5 February 2025, 42 days after its theatrical run. However, you cannot watch the film for free. The streaming platform has availed the film on a rent basis for now at a charge of Rs 249 with a special condition mentioning, “Rentals include 30 days to start watching this video and 48 hours to finish once started”.
Baby John is the official Hindi remake of Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamil blockbuster ‘Theri’. The popularity of the original film failed to reflect on the reception of the remake.
Baby John is a revenge story of a loving father and husband. Varun Dhawan plays the role of Inspector Satya Varma aka Baby John, living a quaint life in the city of Kerala with his daughter Khushi (Zara Zyanna)having left behind his life of criminals and investigation.
Chaos emerges to their seemingly peaceful life when Khushi’s teacher (Wamiqa Gabbi) reveals the past identity of Baby John, taking him 6 years back in time fighting the brute antagonist Babar Sher essayed by Jackky Shroff, and taking revenge on his wife played by Keerthy Suresh.
The predictable plotline and underwhelming engagement could not land the film as a blockbuster in theaters. And the negative word-of-mouth publicity further impacted the box office collection, and reviews of the film.

Reports suggest that Baby John was made on a mega scale with a budget of more than Rs.160 crore but could not recover the return on investment as the film could only manage to earn a total of an estimated Rs. 50 crore.
With its digital release, the film may have a new opportunity to find a broader audience base that may do justice to the film.
The film has a stellar cast of Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gaabi, Jackky Shroff, and Rajpal Yadav. Salman Khan makes a special appearance in the film helmed by Kalees, with Murad Khetani, Priya Atlee, and Jyoti Deshpande producing the film under the banner of Jio Studios, A for Apple Studios, and Cine1 Studios.
