Hindi Retro Films:  Triptii Dimri and Rajkummar Rao have hit it across the room with their 90s setting film ‘Vicky Aur Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video’. From the hairstyle to the CD player, the film has surged a wave of nostalgia for everyone. The trailer promises a comedy ride with stellar like Vijay Raaz and Mallika Sherawat.

The movie will hit the theatres on 11 October. Till then you can watch the following movies with a perfect retro vibe on OTT. 

The Archies on Netflix

Directed by Zoya Akhtar, The Archies is a teen musical comedy set in the fictional town of Riverdale in the 1960s. The film follows a group of teenagers discovering themselves in diverse fields with age as they realize they are bound by their land. The series will take you back to the 60s with fashion, food, and a message.  

Qala on Netflix 

Triptii Dimri in the titular role of Qala, the movie will take you back to the 1940s with a grim overcast resembling the black-and-white world of glitz and glamour. A young girl’s ambition to impress her mother pulls her into the dark work of cinema, where becoming a playback singer comes with its own perils. Qala’s music will be a delight for lovers of 40s songs.  

Bulbbul on Netflix 

Produced by Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Sharma, Bulbbul stars Triptii Dimri in the titular role. Set in the 1880s in the Presidency Bengal, the film blends themes of the supernatural to fight against the atrocities inflicted on women of the time due to patriarchy.  

Gangubai Kathiawadi on Netflix 

Sanjay Leela Bhansali recreated the notorious Kamathipura district of the 1950s and 60s meticulously. The story is a biopic of Ganga Harjivandas also known as Gangubai, who emerged as the mafia queen and a messiah for the prostitution workers of the area. Throughout her life she fought for the rights of sex workers and voiced the need for its legal recognition as a profession.  

 

Bombay Velvet on Disney+ Hotstar 

Anurag Kashyap’s directorial set in 1960s Bombay will give the audience an insight into the gangster terror of the time as the film follows a street boxer and a Jazz singer’s aspiration in the cut-throat life of Bombay.

Rustom on Zee5 

With Akshay Kumar in the titular role of Rustom and Ileana D’Cruz as his wife Cynthia, Rustom narrates the event of the landmark judgment of the KM Nanavati case, post which the Jury system ended in the country. The story is about a naval officer accused of killing her wife’s lover.

Lootera on Disney+ Hotstar 

Set in the West Bengal in the 1950s, Lootera follows a tragic romance between an aristocrat’s daughter and an archaeologist. The film takes you to the time of the Zamindari Abolition Act by the newly independent India. 

The retro nostalgia playlist will keep you entertained, till Triptii Dimri and Rajkummar Rao’s next makes its way to the theatres.
