20 Feb, 2023

Heavy rains in coastal areas of Brazil’s south-east have caused flooding and landslides, killing 36 people and displacing hundreds of others. Rescue workers are continuously searching for victims, reconnecting isolated communities and clearing blocked roads.

Destruction in São Paulo

The São Paulo state government said that 35 died in the city of São Sebastião and a seven-year-old girl was killed in neighboring Ubatuba. The weather predictions showed heavy rains would continue in São Paulo’s coastal area, creating more difficulties for civil defence and fire department rescue teams.

Carnival Cancelled

Sao Paulo state Governor Tarcisio de Freitas declared an emergency in five towns along the coast. Carnival events were cancelled in Sao Sebastiao, Ubatuba, Ilhabela and Bertioga.
