Buzzing Corporate Terminologies: The New Work World Slangs You Should Know

Corporate World Slangs:  Be it categorizing the generational difference in the workplace into ‘Boomers’, ‘Millennials’, or ‘Genz’ or conveying the depth of emotions and feelings with ‘ate and left no crumbs’ or ‘slay queen’ the slang trend has also enveloped the corporate world in its range.

We are no longer using dull and archaic phases to define phenomena in the work world. There has been an upsurge of many “new terms” in the workplace over the last few years thanks to the shift in office culture, hybrid modes of employment, video conferencing, and more.

Let us go through some of these new slang, so that next time anyone uses them, we won’t feel FOMO!!

Coffee Badging

In the most recent addition to workplace slang, coffee badging has emerged after the mandate of office-to-work return policies. The term defines the phenomena of workplace presenteeism where employees show up in the office, grab some coffee, share a laugh here, a conversation with their fellow employees there, and go back home to work remotely.

Office Peacocking

More like an answer to the problem of coffee badging. Office peacocking is saying goodbye to the dull and boring office interiors and cubicles & greeting hello to the new, quirky, fun, office refashioning with a tinge of jubilant optimism to allure the employees to return back to the office willingly.

Quite Quitting

When feeling burnt out due to the burdening office environment and economic highs and lows, why outrightly leave a job when you can just quietly keep doing the bare minimum to stay in the job?

Quite quitting is when the employee stops going above and beyond in the job role and sustains the position by putting in minimum sufficient effort.

Act You Wage

Basically, work according to the pay offered. Acting your wage is saying “I am not paid enough for this” and moving on. This empowers the employee by letting them decide the amount of effort and energy they wish to put into work as per their wage but could have an adverse effect on productivity and career growth. The act of doing the work that you are paid for only.

Proximity Bias

Proximity Bias is the idea that the employees spend more time in the office, i.e. physical mode of employment are closer to the organization. After the emergence of a hybrid mode of work, the belief had become more prominent. However, this can make the convenience of working remotely, a problem as well in the hybrid workplaces.

Career Cushioning

Careen Cushioning is softening the blow of an unexpected layoff by upskilling, reskilling, or doing a side hustle. Owing to the job market trends and contemporary economic environment, career cushioning is a preventive measure taken by many employees to have a back-up by preparing oneself with a more diverse skill set or applying to other jobs.

Moon Lighting

A new term for an old phenomenon, moonlighting is when an employee works two jobs or does a side job without it being common knowledge of the employer.  Also known with words like side gig, and side hustle. Moonlighting could have severe consequences, like losing your job if your employer finds out.

In the evolving terminologies of language, these were a few new or existing add-ons, that can be laid hands on to be updated with the newly emerging trends and slang at the workplace.
