Estonia becomes first Baltic nation to legalise same-sex marriage
As the first Baltic country to do so, the Riigikogu, or Estonian parliament, on Tuesday (June 20) adopted a new bill to legalise same-sex marriage. This occurs nine years after the nation recognised same-sex civil unions and months after the liberal coalition government led by present Prime Minister Kaja Kallas took office. The result also makes Slovenia, which passed a change allowing same-sex couples to marry and adopt last year, the second country in central Europe to pass regulations legalising same-sex marriage.
