Diwali is now a public school holiday in New York City, Mayor Eric Adams declared on Monday, in honour of the expansion of the city's South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities.According to the lunar calendar, Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, takes place in October or November.However, because Thanksgiving falls on a Sunday this year—November 12—the move will not have an impact on the 2023–2024 school year.
