Dengue is one of the most common mosquito-borne diseases worldwide. The symptoms of Dengue fever start to show around 3-14 days after the infection and can lead to symptoms like fever, body rashes, aches, and more. This special conversation with Dr Sushila Kataria from Medanta Hospital, lets dig more around the  dieces in detail. 

What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease occurring in tropical and subtropical areas. The viruses of Dengue spread in humans through the bite of the female mosquitoes of Aedes species. The virus responsible for causing dengue, is called dengue virus (DENV).

As per the statistics, Almost half of the world’s population i.e about 4 billion people, live in areas with a risk of dengue. Also people who get infected from the Dengue for the second time are at greater risk of developing severe disease.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever

Some of the most common symptoms of Dengue Fever include high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain. In severe cases people might experience serious bleeding and shock leading to life threatening circumstances. 

How to Protect Yourself from Dengue Fever?

Since the virus travels in humans after an infected mosquito bite, one should take measures on avoiding the breeding of mosquitoes. Usage of insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and controlling mosquitoes inside and outside your home, avoiding storing water in the open for a long time, and cleaning coolers from time to time are some measures to avoid mosquitoes and dengue.
