Colored token coins for Diwali 2021:
Now colored coins can also be issued in India on certain special occasions. The issuance of these coins will commence from 2nd November, on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras from Kolkata mint. The minting of Laxmi-faced token coins of zero denomination is underway at the mint. It is also being considered as a preparation to uniquely mark the commemorative coins issued during the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, which may be the first colored coins to be issued with the denomination.
Although private companies have been making Ganesh-Lakshmi colored coins for almost two years, such colored coins will be issued for the first time from the government mint. The colored token coin of 40 mm diameter and 20 grams to be issued on Dhanteras will be of 999 tons pure silver. It will have a color portrait of Padmasana Mahalakshmi on one side and the official logo of Securities Printing and Currency Manufacturing Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) on the other. This coin will not have a denomination similar to the token coins issued on the 550th Prakashotsav of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Prayagraj Kumbh.
These coins will not come into circulation but can be saved as a memory. Coin collector Sudhir Lunavat says that these coins inscribed with Maa Lakshmi will be the first colored token coins to be issued by the Government of India. This is a big step of the government in the direction of popularizing commemorative coins.
The Kolkata Mint of Securities Printing and Currency Manufacturing Corporation of India Limited has procured machines from Germany for minting colored coins. Now the other mints of the Corporation, in Mumbai, and Hyderabad are also moving in the same direction. Commemorative coins and silver tokens related to the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav will be minted here too.
For buying colored coins, the booking will be done on the website of Kolkata Mint and will start after the issuance of coins.
Although the value of the coins has not been made public yet, it is believed that its price can be around two thousand rupees.
The world's first colored coin was issued by Canada in the year 2004, while Australia and England have also issued colored coins.
