Father’s Day 2024: Know Date, History, Significance, How To Celebrate The Special Day For Dads

Father’s Day 2024: After celebrating Mother’s Day in May, the special day to celebrate your father is around the corner. Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. The day is dedicated to honoring and celebrating fathers and father figures for their contributions to the family and society. While mothers are thought to provide love, affection, and care, fathers are said to be the pillars of strength and discipline, giving their children invisible affection in the shadow of strength and their composed self. Father's Day allows you to express your love, appreciation, and gratitude to fathers. This year, Father's Day will be celebrated on Sunday, June 16, 2024.

Father’s Day History

Father's Day dates back to the early twentieth century in the United States. The establishment of Mother’s Day inspired the concept of Father’s Day. Sonora Smart Dodd organized the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1910. She wanted to honour her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and single parent of six children. Dodd persuaded local churches and government representatives to designate a day to honour fathers after being inspired by Mother’s Day.

However, Father’s Day did not gain as much traction as Mother’s Day. It wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation naming the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. It became a permanent national holiday after President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Father’s Day Significance

Fathers play crucial roles as providers, protectors, mentors, and role models. They work tirelessly and diligently without showing their worries and pain, with a commitment to provide everything to the family. Father’s Day is very important both culturally and emotionally. It’s a day to honour and be grateful for the work and sacrifices dads do for their families. Father’s Day enhances the bonds between family members and recognizes the role dads play in their children’s social and emotional growth.

In addition, Father’s Day offers a chance to consider how fathers’ roles have changed in contemporary society. It emphasizes that fathers can be both caregivers and breadwinners, highlighting the significance of fatherhood in raising and supporting children.
