Father’s Day 2024: As much as we celebrate our mothers on Mother’s Day, fathers often do not show their emotions and always stay composed and disciplined, even when spending leisure time with their families. To honour and appreciate fathers for all their hard work, Father’s Day is celebrated annually every third Sunday of June, providing an opportunity to show love and care to your father and father figures in your life. This year, Father’s Day is falling on 16 June, 2024.
While Mother's Day has been celebrated since the early twentieth century, Father’s Day took longer to gain popularity but has since become a beloved tradition. Sonora Smart Dodd proposed the idea to honour her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own. Inspired by the newly established Mother’s Day, Dodd advocated for a similar holiday to recognize fathers’ contributions. Although the initial reaction was lukewarm, the concept gradually gained traction. While in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers in 1966. Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday by President Richard Nixon in 1972, and it is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
