Filmfare Awards is among one of the most famous film events of the country, and are a group of awards that honour the artistic and technical talents from the Hindi Cinema or popularly known as Bollywood. The Filmfare Awards 2021 will air on Television (TV) on 11th April 2021 i.e., Sunday at 12 PM on the ColorsTV channel. Filmfare Awards were for the first time introduced in 1954 by the Filmfare magazine of The Times Group. While the Filmfare awards were initially named after Clare Mendonca, the editor of The Times of India, as the “Clare Awards” or “The Clares”. The Filmfare Awards are voted by the opinion of the public and by a special committee of experts.
During the 1990s the Filmfare Awards which are sponsored by many private organisations used to be broadcasted live to television audiences, but ever since 2001, a recorded and edited version of these awards is aired a week or two after the ceremony has been conducted.
The Filmfare Awards were introduced in 1954 as The Clares, named after the editor of The Times of India, Clare Mendonca. The first-ever Filmfare Award was presented 67 years ago on 21st March 1954. The first Filmfare Best Actor Award was presented to Dilip Kumar for his film Daag, for the best actress to Meena Kumari for her film Baiju Bawra, for best director to Bimal Roy for Do Bigha Zameen. Naushad was presented the first Filmfare best music director award for the film Baiju Bawra, and the first Filmfare award for best film was earned by the film Do Bigha Zameen.
Walking down the Red Carpet is a special segment at the Filmfare Awards which takes before the actual award ceremony begins. The red Carpet section is where all the actors, actresses, producers, directors, singers, composers, etc. who have contributed in a way to the Indian Cinema, are introduced as well as interrogated by the hosts about their future ventures.
The statuette of the Filmfare Awards is often referred to as “The Black Lady” or “The lady in black” as the statuette depicts a woman with her arms raised upwards in a dancing position with her fingers touching.
Amongst many controversies, Filmfare Awards 2020 were criticised a lot by the audiences for presenting 13 awards straight in a row to the Zoya Akhtar directorial project Gully Boy. Fans from different backgrounds have pointed out Gully Boy and its cast and crew for being honoured as the Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Lyrics, Best Screenplay and many others, while many brilliant movies such as Kesari and Chichore among others weren’t recognised at all. It was after the Filmfare Awards 2020 that many artists including the lyricist of Kesari Manoj Muntashir have boycotted Filmfare awards and took to Twitter to announce the same.
