Food Test: How to Identify Between Real & Fake Paneer With Easy Methods

24 Mar, 2025

Paneer Test: Paneer is a popular ingredient in Indian cuisine, known for its high protein, calcium, and vitamin B12 content, which help to build strong bones and muscles. However, due to increased adulteration, phony paneer is now being offered in marketplaces. This fake version frequently contains fake milk, starch, and toxic chemicals that can harm digestion, disrupt kidney and liver function, induce stomach infections, and even cause heart problems.

Difference Between Real and Fake Paneer

Real paneer has a slightly sweet and creamy flavour, however fake paneer might taste bitter or unnatural. Authentic paneer is soft and spongy, recovering its shape when squeezed, whereas fake paneer is either excessively rubbery or overly sticky due to starch or synthetic additions. A simple water test can also be useful; real paneer floats due to its protein and fat content, but fake paneer sinks. Furthermore, the iodine test detects starch; if the paneer turns blue or black, it contains starch. Pricing is another factor; much cheaper paneer is most likely contaminated.  Finally, heating paneer in oil can disclose its realness; real paneer holds its shape and gradually releases moisture, whereas fake paneer burns quickly or disintegrates.
