Summer is at its peak in most parts of the country. In such a situation, the demand for electricity is also making a record. On June 10, 2023, for the first time in the country, the demand for electricity has also crossed 2.23 lakh MW. Despite the power demand being 2.23 Lakh MW, the power supply position is generally normal.
According to the report of the government undertaking Grid India, a reduction of only 189 MW has been recorded in the peak hour. In that too, a shortfall of 170 MW has been observed in the northern region. There is no shortage of electricity in the western and southern regions of the country.
It is estimated that power demand will remain high for a fortnight more and when monsoon covers most parts of the country, there is a possibility of reduction in power demand. The Center had already estimated the power demand to reach 2.29 lakh MW in May. By the way, the demand for electricity has not yet reached that level.
In April and May, 2023, the demand for electricity has not been high due to above normal rainfall in the western and northern parts. Most of the electricity requirement of the country is being met from thermal power plants only.
