Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken a big decision regarding RuPay Card today. RBI has decided to allow the issuance of RuPay Prepaid Forex Card by banks in India at ATMs, POS machines and for use by merchants abroad. Apart from this, RuPay debit, credit and prepaid cards will also be allowed to be issued abroad and used globally including in India. This step of the government will increase the reach and acceptance of RuPay cards across the world. These announcements were made by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on June 8, 2023.
As per the recent Annual Report of RBI, RBI's Payment Vision Document 2025 has already laid out the roadmap to expand the global reach of RuPay Card. For the global reach of RuPay Card, arrangements have been made with Bhutan, Singapore, Nepal and UAE to accept RuPay Card without co-branding with other international card schemes.
The issuance of RuPay cards in other countries is also being examined. However, now the Reserve Bank will continue to partner with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) for cross-border payments and increase the global reach of UPI and RuPay cards.
