G-20 Summit 2023 Delhi: What is concern of China with India G20 theme Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam

10 Aug, 2023

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, you've probably seen this Sanskrit phrase inscribed on G-20 posters; it means "this world is one family." Most of us would not mind, but China has stated its displeasure with this word.

Why is China having a problem?

China claimed that the term 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' could not be used in official G-20 documents. They claim that it is a Sanskrit word, and that this language is not one of the six official languages recognised by the United Nations (UN). According to information gathered, the majority of the member countries support India on this subject. Some member states have even said that the matter is solely the responsibility of the host country and the country holding the presidency. However, China was adamantly opposed to including the Sanskrit term.

According to G-20 secretariat sources, China is averse to welcoming or supporting it as a concept. However, sources indicate that he has no objection to referencing it "in context."
