Yamuna Ghat Vegetables: Do you know where most of the vegetables that are sold in Delhi are grown? To know the truth behind the vegetables grown in the Yamuna ghat areas, our team visited the Ghats and checked the quality of vegetables to know whether poisonous chemicals are being used in the vegetables grown here. In this an eye-opening report, our team also talked with farmers to found out the reality.
While talking to farmer, he told that his family have been farming here since the last 25 years. Previously, the region was most known for its rose cultivation, but the disastrous flood destroyed everything. Since then, the emphasis has turned to cultivating crops including spinach, mustard seeds, coriander, and fenugreek. Ladyfinger, ridge gourd, and bottle gourd are currently in season, whereas spinach, mustard, fenugreek, and cauliflower are grown in the winter. Agriculture takes place all year, and the produce is transported to several markets, including Chilla Mandi, where transactions take place. Although pesticides are normally avoided, they become necessary when pests pose a threat. The primary fertilizers used are urea and DAP, and water is pulled with an engine attached to a head pump. Unfortunately, this water comes from the Yamuna River, which contains a significant quantity of urban and industrial waste from Delhi. This toxic water is used to irrigate crops as well as to wash them, polluting the veggies with hazardous compounds.
