HMPV Virus: After almost five years of the deadly COVID-19 virus outbreak worldwide, a new virus has been discovered in China called the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). If reports are to be believed, the hospitals and medical institutions are overcrowded with infected patients, and crematories are filled with dead bodies. According to reports, China is currently witnessing multiple virus outbreaks including influenza A and HMPV, with panic increasing in the country. It is also said that China has declared a state of emergency, however, no official confirmation is rolled out.

As the HMPV virus is wreaking havoc in China, its neighbouring country India is also on high alert to avoid any COVID-like situation in any state. Talking about the virus, HMPV causes flu-like symptoms and typically affects the upper respiratory system, but it can occasionally cause lower respiratory infections. HMPV is more widespread throughout the winter and early spring. Let us know more about the symptoms, prevention, and more.

What is HMPV Virus?

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) was discovered in 2001 and belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which also includes respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It often causes upper and lower respiratory infections, with symptoms like the common cold or flu. HMPV frequently causes upper respiratory infections, but it can also induce lower respiratory infections such as pneumonia, asthma flare-ups, or exacerbate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

HMPV Symptoms

The symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of other respiratory illnesses. It is necessary to see a doctor if symptoms increase or if you observe signs of severe respiratory distress, especially in high-risk groups such as babies or the elderly. Some common symptoms are:

Cough

Runny or stuffy nose

Sore throat and fever

Difficulty breathing

Wheezing

Bronchiolitis (inflammation of the tiny airways in the lungs)

Pneumonia

How HMPV Spreads?

Human metapneumovirus is largely transmitted through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, releasing the virus into the air. It can also spread by direct contact, such as touching one's face after coming into contact with an infected person or a virus-contaminated surface. Shared surfaces, such as doorknobs, toys, or tables, can host the virus for long periods of time, making it simple to contract through contact.

Who Can Get HMPV?

HMPV can infect persons of any age. Infants and young children are especially vulnerable since their immune systems are still growing. People over the age of 65 frequently have weak immune systems, which makes them more vulnerable. Apart from that, those who have cancer, HIV, or are undergoing chemotherapy are more likely to develop serious infections.

HMPV Prevention Tips

There is currently no vaccine or specialized antiviral treatment for HMPV. Prevention primarily includes practicing good hygiene and taking steps to reduce viral exposure.

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When soap is not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers instead.

  • Avoid people who are showing indications of respiratory sickness. Keep unwell youngsters at home to avoid spreading illness at schools or daycare centers.

  • Regularly clean high-touch areas such as doorknobs, toys, and electrical devices.

  • If you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow. Dispose of tissues properly and wash your hands shortly after.

  • Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep to improve your immune system.
