With dropping temperatures going out for long walks can be laborious for dogs as well. In cities with thick fog and pollution, the conditions are further critical and can result in troubled breathing for them as well. To keep them active and warm, ensure to extend their playtime at home in moderate temperatures. Do take them for a shorter walk, and be mindful of the cues when they display tiredness.
Keep the sitting or sleeping place of your dogs cosy and warm by adding more blankets, thermal linen, and thick padding on their bed or in kennels to keep them warm. Ensure any windows or doors around their beddings are tightly closed.
Some dog breeds are naturally thick-furred and adapted to cold temperatures hence they do not struggle in cold. However, dogs with light coats require extra attention and clothing. Get them pet-friendly thermals like jackets and sweaters with no metallic accents that may irritate their skin.
Going out for walks in the early morning or after snow can result in a dampened paw that can make them cold. Wipe and dry their paws regularly every time they enter the house from outside.
Pets usually burn more calories in winter as a method of keeping them warm. They might need more food in colder months. So it's best to contact your vet regarding the same if you feel like there is a need to adjust their diet. Also, ensure their food and water are a little warm to prevent them from freezing.
