India banned Basmati Rice export, US supermarkets crowded

The sudden announcement of India’s ban on rice export has created havoc in parts of the US. This decision was to increase the domestic supply in India. There are disturbing visuals being circulated of Indians rushing to their nearby grocery stores to hoard as many heaps of Basmati rice for storage. Unavailability of Indian food to NRIs can be problematic for people.

Rise in Price of Rice

Due to this, the rise in price of rice has been seen, again creating a discomfort and rush. There are visuals of lengthy lines outside supermarkets and snatching of rice packets is causing distress among the people.

25% of rice export is of Indian Non Basmati white rice that is exported . Globally 40% of the rice is Exported by India. The ban includes countries like African Countries, Turkey, Syria and Pakistan, which are already running on inflated food prices.
