Now NPCI has approved Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) living in 10 countries to use UPI for bank accounts using their international mobile numbers. Until recently, an NRI needed a valid Indian mobile number to set up a UPI ID for any application, which is no longer the case. That is, now NRIs can use UPI with their international or non-Indian mobile numbers.
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) will be able to use Unified Payments Interface (UPI) on their international mobile numbers. When a user activates UPI from an application, the app sends an SMS from the number to confirm whether the mobile number is linked to the bank account. So, people who had moved abroad, if they wanted to use UPI in India, they would have to keep their Indian mobile numbers active. This will come with the cost of maintaining the phone number and paying an amount to recharge it every month.
