Indian Women Musicians:  Amar Singh Chamkila recently made us all realise how cinema continues to bring the journey of long-lost stars to the forefront. We, as an audience relish watching the human struggles and challenges behind the fame and fortune an artist, a sportsperson, or a businessman, went through to get that success, because they make us seen as ordinary people working hard till we are not so ordinary maybe. So as much as we enjoyed the story of Chamkila, there are many promising women artists in the music scene whose journey still awaits storytelling. These women have been pioneers in their fields inspiring a generation of us to dream big outside the shackles of society’s gendered expectations.

Usha Khanna

A legendary figure in the Indian music industry, Usha Khanna is one of the most commercially successful music directors of her time when men dominated industries. She was the first woman to be nominated for the Filmfare award for directing the music of the movie ‘Souten’.

Some of her popular works are ‘Chodo kal ki baatein’, ‘Shaayad meri shaadi ka khayal’, ‘Zindagi pyaar ka geet hai’ and ‘Agar tum na hote.’

Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Mangeshkar is called the ‘Nightingale of India’ with a discography of around 25,000 songs in multiple languages to her credit. Would you not like to watch her journey on the silver screen? Her success has been an outcome of immense hard work, rejections, and struggles she carved an indomitable space for herself in the industry.

Bibbo (Ishrat Sultana)

Ishrat Sultana wore many hats. She was a music composer, singer, and actress with her works entertained the audiences of India and Pakistan. She is said to be the first women music director of Bollywood with ‘Adal-e-Jahangir’ in 1934

Shreya Ghoshal

One of the highest-paid singers in the Bollywood music industry, Shreya Ghoshal started singing at the tender age of 4. Today her discography boasts songs from multiple languages and allocades to her name from various nations including the highest honour in London by the selected members of Parliament in the House of Commons and ‘Shreya Ghoshal Day’ in Ohio every 26 June.

Sunidhi Chauhan

Known for her versatility as a singer, and her electric stage performances, Sunidhi Chauhan has been reigning the music industry for more than fifteen years. She won Doordarshan's singing reality show ‘Meri Awaz Suno’ at the age of eleven. We would surely love to have her story translated via celluloid.

Women are getting their due credits in all fields slowly but surely, so to all the directors, this is just a pitch to give us our favorite musician's biopic.
