Women-owned and women-led small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) stand to gain from a proposed India-UK free trade agreement (FTA), according to UK Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch. This is because the "Trade and Gender Equality" chapter has been provisionally closed after ten rounds of negotiations.
The cabinet minister also disclosed last week that short-term ease of business mobility and mutual recognition of professional qualifications were among the topics in discussion as part of the FTA in response to the House of Commons Business and Trade Committee, which reviews the work of her department.
Since January of last year, India and the UK have been negotiating an FTA to dramatically improve their existing trade links, which are expected to be worth GBP 36 billion in 2022. The 11th round of negotiations is set to take place this month.
