Sir Ratan Tata Trust was made in accordance with the will of Sir Ratan Ji Tata with a sum of Rs 8 Million in 1919. A century-old trust, Sir Ratan Tata Trust is the oldest grant-giving institution in India. It played a pivotal role in changing traditional ideas of charity with philanthropy granted in the fields of rural livelihoods and communities, education, health, enhancing civil society and governance, and arts, crafts, and culture.

Navajbai was the first female director of Tata Sons and the wife of Ratan Tata. The Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust was established in 1974 in her memory. She was the force behind the establishment of the Sir Ratan Tata Institute (RTI) in Mumbai in 1928. Her trust donated majorly to the “poor and downtrodden” working to “alleviate poverty and improve the quality of life of the economically challenged”.
