International Day to Light 2025: Every year on May 16th, International Day of Light is celebrated as a global celebration of the importance of light in science, culture, art, education, sustainable development, medicine, communications, and energy. It is a day to celebrate the many ways light impacts our lives and to highlight the enormous potential of light-based technologies to address global concerns.

The IDL stresses the importance of such technologies in science, technology, art, and culture, helping to achieve UNESCO's goals of education, equality, and peace. In 2025, International Day of Light is being celebrated on Friday, May 16, with the theme “Light, Innovation, Society.”
International Day of Light History
The International Day of Light was established to commemorate a great scientific achievement. The 16th of May marks the anniversary of physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman’s first successful laser operation in 1960. This innovative discovery, based on Albert Einstein’s theoretical work on the quantum theory of light, transformed several fields, including telecommunications, medicine, industry, and entertainment.
Recognizing the enormous effect of light and light-based technology, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) designated May 16th as the International Day of Light in 2017. This was followed by the success of the International Year of Light in 2015, which highlighted the significance of light science and its applications for sustainable development.
IYL 2015
The United Nations named 2015 the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015) to raise global awareness of light research and applications. Following the success of IYL 2015, Ghana, Mexico, New Zealand, and Russia presented a resolution to the UNESCO Executive Board supporting the concept of an International Day of Light, which was adopted on September 19, 2016, at the Board’s 200th session at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, with the first IDL taking place on May 16, 2018.
