The precious contribution made by women to society often goes unrecognisable. And their existence is usually taken for granted be it of a mother, a sister, a wife or a daughter. There are many misdeeds done against women such as sexual harassment, body shaming and atrocities, which should be totally banned and punished accordingly if done, to uplift the position of women in society. But most importantly, women should be respected for how they are, what they do and what they dream to be.
However, to recognise the contribution of women and celebrate womanhood, International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on 8th March 2021.

The first women’s day was observed as early as of 28th February 1909, in New York City which as organised by the Socialist Party of America. Following this movement, the German delegates including Clara Zetkin, Kate Duncker, Paula Thiede and others brought forward that “a special Women’s Day” should be organised annually, at the International Socialist Women’s Conference, 1910. From the time when women gained a voice in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 was recognised as a national holiday there.
The United Nations began celebrating the day in 1977 and recognised it as International Women’s Day.
International Women’s Day is observed as a public holiday in some countries and is widely ignored too elsewhere. However, in many places, the day is commemorated as a day of protest while a day that celebrates womanhood, at others.
While the primary intent to celebrate the day is to spread awareness among people regarding women’s rights and promote gender equality. The day also focuses on recognising the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and to encourage them to cross every hurdle fulfilling their dreams.
The International Women’s Day commemoration is based on a theme every year. And the theme for International Women’s Day 2021 is “Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 World.”
