21st June has been globally recognised as the International Yoga Day. This year, the occasion falls on Saturday, providing a platform to promote the importance of yoga for mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
This year marks the 11th International Yoga Day since its first celebration in 2014. Every year, a theme is decided to focus on a holistic approach to spread awareness around Yoga.
The theme for International Yoga Day 2025 is “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” underscoring how Yoga is a harmony of body, mind, and soul as well as the environment. The theme aims to promote a healthier planet through the means of Yoga, where a lifestyle aligned with environmental sustainability can benefit us and the planet.
The inception of an International platform to spread the word about the importance of Yoga is credited to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 27 September 2014, he unraveled the ancient Indian practice of Yog or Yoga to achieve the balance of life, mind, body, and soul for a healthier lifestyle and life.
He said, “Yoga is an amazing gift from our ancient tradition.
It represents the integration of mind and body, thinking and action- a holistic approach that is beneficial to our health and well-being. Yoga is not just about fitness; it is a method to explore your sense of oneness with yourself, the world, and nature.”
The UN then officially designated 21st June as the International Yoga Day.
