How to become an IRS officer? Know eligibility, age limit, qualification, salary and more

IRS Officer: Indian Revenue Services(IRS)  is the fourth most revered designation in Civil Services. The first three positions are of IAS’s, IPS’s and IFS’s. If the field of economy interests you then IRS can be chosen as a career.

These officers formulate the tax administration of India. They are either under the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) or the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) in the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance.


IRS Officer Job Description

What work does an IRS Offider do: IRS officers are responsible for the collection, administration and policy formation of direct (Income, Corporate, Wealth, FBT etc.) and indirect (Central Excise, Service Tax and even Customs Duty) taxes.


 IRS Officer Eligibility: Qualification, Age, Salary


 IRS Officer Education Qualification

A candidate must have a degree from an Indian University or an equivalent qualification. Those in the final year of a degree course can also apply and appear in the Preliminary Examination conducted every year by UPSC.


 IRS Officer Age Limit

The candidate must have attained the age of 21 years on 1st August of the year. The maximum age is 32 years.

  • For General Category: 32years 

  • For OBC: up to 35 years

  • For SC/ST: up to 37 years

  • For Defense Services Personnel: The upper age limit is also relaxed for 


Other Eligibility terms

  • a citizen of India, or

  • a subject of Nepal, or

  • a subject of Bhutan, or

  • a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

  • a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

  2. Mains exam followed  

  3. Interview.
