Joydeep Karmakar, born on September 7, 1979, in Kolkata, West Bengal is an Indian shooter. Karmakar started his sports career in 1989. He became a Junior National Champion in his first Nationals in 1994. He represented India in 28 World Cups, 2 Commonwealth Games, 1 Asian Games and 3 World Championships. He is the personal coach to Mehuli Ghosh (Asian Champion).

As Joydeep Karmakar belonged to a middle class family, he had to face financial hardships while aiming for his dream career. When he qualified for the 2012 Olympics, the news of his selection made him spellbound for a moment. Soon he understood what was happening and felt immensely proud for being able to represent his country in the Olympics after much hard work and training.

We often think that shooting is a costly sport, which is not totally wrong. But Karmakar points out the other half of the fact. He cites the example of air weapon training where the cost of each bullet is around 1 rupee, hence affordable. 

The government should pay equally to all the athletes. Shooting should be treated the same way as other sports. His expectations are high from the present shooting team. Small-town shooters are coming up the frontline and raising the standard of shooting as a sport. 

Some don't consider shooting as a sport, to them he cites the facts that shooting has remained a part of Olympics since the time of first modern olympics.
