Who is Kani Kusruti ?

Born on 12 September 1985 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala to Jayasree A. K. and Maitreya Maitreyan, Kani Kusruti is an Indian actor who primarily works in the Malayalam film industry. She is popularly known for her roles in the recent film ‘All We Imagine As Light’, which contested in the Golden Globes Awards and the Oscars.

Her parents are social activists and rationalists, who dropped their surnames to fight the indicators of societal hierarchies. Kani herself identifies as an atheist and rationalist, who opted her surname Kusruti meaning mischievous in Malayalam at the compulsion of filling it in her class 10th board exam.

Education

Kani is a seasoned theater practitioner and learned actor. She was introduced to stage acting in her home city with the Abhinaya Theatre Research Centre. 

She was a part of the Thrissur School of Drama to learn the theater arts from 2005 to 2007 and went to the  L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris to complete her theater education. 

Career 

Her journey en route to become an actor started at the age of 15. She made her theater debut with Baudhayana's classic farce Bhagavadajjukam playing the lead role of Vasantsena for 6 years from 2000. 

In 2007, she played Kamala in Siddhartha (2007), invited to Villeneuve en Scene Festival d'Avignon. 

She started her film career in 2009, with Kerala Cafe in the segment called ‘Island Express’. In 2010 she gained attention for her portrayal in Shikkar (2010) and Cocktail (2010).

She rose to  fame with Eswaran Sakshiyayi (2015). playing Advocate Tresa in a murder investigation drama.
