Lalduhoma Biography: The newly elected Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma is an Indian politician, currently serving as the new and the sixth Chief Minister of Mizoram on 8 December, 23. He is a member of the Zoram Nationalist Party. Know all about Mizoram’s current CM in the article.
Lalduhoma was born to Vaisang and Kaichhingi at Talpui village on 22 February 1949. He has three siblings in his family.
He got married to Liansailovi and has been blessed with two children. The couple dwells at Chawlhhmun, Aizawl.
His middle education has been from the Khawzawl elementary and middle schools. For matriculation, he went to G.M. High School, Champai. Lalduhoma is the holder of a bachelor’s degree from Gauhati University, with distinction.
He was an aspirant and appeared in the Indian civil service examination at Shillong, where he successfully earned the role of the IPS and served as a squad leader at Goa.
1972-1982
Lalduhoma’s political career started even before he got a degree. He was appointed as the Principal Assistant to the Chief Minister of Mizoram in 1972. He served in the role for 5 years.
His achievements as the squad leader escalated his designation to security in charge of the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1982. He also got promoted ad the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
1984
He chose to resign from the police service to join the Indian National Congress after getting inspired by Indira Gandhi and solved the matter of the Mizo National Front insurgency by negotiating with the MNF leader Laldenga for a peace talk with the Indian government.
Though Lalduhoma played a crucial role in INC’s win in Mizroram that year, he himself lost the Legislative Assembly Election from the Lunglei constituency.
With the backing of Indira Gandhi, he was elected as the president of INC in Mizoram on 31 May 1984.
1988
He withdrew his membership from INC after the lack of promised peace actions of the party, in 1984. He became the first MP to be disqualified under the Anti-Defection Law for giving up his membership in the Indian National Congress, the party he represented in 1988.
In 1986 he formed the Mizo National Union and became the working president of it.
1997
He joined the MNF after it became a recognized political party as an advisor, and then went on to establish the Zoram Nationalist Party in 1997.
2018
In the 2018 election, Lalduhoma contested as an independent after his party, the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), faced recognition issues. Despite winning in two constituencies, he chose Serchhip and became the opposition leader. In 2020, 12 ruling party MLAs alleged he violated anti-defection laws. Disqualified by the Speaker, he became the first MLA removed from the Mizoram Legislative Assembly, claiming his case was unique as he remained faithful to ZPM despite being independent due to incomplete party registration.
