A wealthy bidder broke a record established in the United Arab Emirates more than ten years ago by spending a world-record 55 million dirhams ($15 million or 123 crore) on a rare car licence plate in Dubai.
According to Emirates Auction LLC, plate number P 7—which at first glance appears to be the number 7 by itself with the P offset—was sold on Saturday during a charity auction. The proceeds will go to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid's 1 Billion Meals Endowment, a global food relief effort. He is the ruler of Dubai.
In order to raise money for charity, the UAE regularly auctions off vanity licence plates that the super-wealthy use to flaunt their rank and wealth. The most recent auction shattered a record established in 2008 by local entrepreneur Saeed Abdul Ghaffar Khouri, who shelled out 52.2 million dirhams for an Abu Dhabi number plate featuring the number 1.
