The film has been shortlisted for the 97th Academy Awards in the Best Live Action Short Film category.

Anuja Cast and Plot 

The short film stars Sajda Pathan in the titular role of 9-year-old Anuja and Ananya Shanbhag as her sister Palak. 

The film narrates the story of two sisters, working in a small garment factory to meet their needs with the hopes of education, and a dream of a better future. Bringing the focus on the struggles of working children, balancing their life as young kids ripped off of their childhood trying to make a life of their own out of misery. 

Anuja is at a challenging threshold where her chance to finally attend school would impact the future of her family.

The film is not a dull imitation, but a hopeful revelation of the aspiration and twinkle in the eyes of two girls’ resilience and power. They fight against those trying to push them to the margins.

Producer Mindy Kaling has described ‘Anuja’ as “powerful, hopeful, and full of life, just like the incredible young girls it represents.” 

The film is slated to release on global streaming giant Netflix. Its release date is still under wraps.
