PM Modi Jan Dhan Yojana: On August 28th, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) celebrated nine years of effective implementation. On August 15, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the PMJDY in his Independence Day speech. The Prime Minister launched the scheme on August 28, 2014, for Financial Inclusion to enable affordable access to financial services such as banking/savings and deposit accounts, remittance, credit, insurance, and pension.
Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman marked PMJDY’s 9th anniversary by saying, “With the collaborative efforts of stakeholders, banks, insurance companies, and government officials, the PMJDY stands out as a pivotal initiative, changing the landscape of financial inclusion in the country as envisioned by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.” More than 50 crore people have been brought into the formal banking system through Jan Dhan Accounts. Women own around 55.5% of these accounts, and 67% are situated in rural or semi-urban areas. The sum deposited in these accounts crosses Rs.2 lakh crore. In addition, around 34 million RuPay cards with a 2 lakh accident insurance cover have been distributed free of charge to these accounts.
