The prices of spices present in the kitchen of every household have increased so much that the common man has started sweating. The increase of 24 per cent in cumin and turmeric has made its use in vegetables seem tight. Due to exports and strong domestic demand, cumin has reached Rs 56000 per quintal. This increase in cumin prices is continuing due to fall in production after unseasonal rains in the month of March in Gujarat and Rajasthan, the two main cumin producing states.

Here the prices of ginger and dry ginger are also skyrocketing, due to which the taste of tea and vegetables has been affected. Ranjana Kulkarni, a resident of Matunga, says, “The government says that retail inflation has come down to 4.25%, but the kitchen budget has completely deteriorated. 100 grams of ginger is available for Rs.40. Chilli has also become expensive. Tomatoes are already Rs 150 a kg. We have stopped using them. APMC Secretary Anil Chavan says that the reason for ginger reaching Rs 325 per kg is due to unseasonal rains in Karnataka and the ongoing tension in Manipur due to its short supply.
