EXPLAINED: Prime Minister’s Levels of Security and Security Arrangements during his Visits- Watch Video

India's Prime Minister security is as highly stringent as that of other head of any State. Especially it is the responsibility of SPG i.e. Special Protection Group to provide 24 hour's surveillance and security to the Prime Minister of India.

For any country, President and Prime Minister is the leader of the executive of the Government of India and his security is a matter of paramount importance. Any glitch in the security system can have ghastly results for the nation.

There are special provisions made to avoid any breach of security and highly trained commando personnel is deployed to provide acute safety to the Prime Minister. Let’s take a look at the Levels of security for the Prime Minister in India.

India provides security details to high-risk individuals by the police and local government. DependinAfter analyzing the threat perception to the person, the category is divided into six tiers: SPG, Z+ (highest level), Z, Y+, Y and X. 
 
People that come under the umbrella of under this security include (but are not limited to) the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Supreme Court and High Court Judges, Service Chiefs of Indian Armed Forces, Governors of State, Chief Ministers and Cabinet Ministers, celebrities and Very Important Persons(VIP)

  1. Special Protection Group(SPG): SPG is an elite force whose details are confidential and classified. These details are only provided to the Prime Minister of India. SPG only provide protection to the Prime Minister of India. 

  2. Z+ category: It is security comprising 55 personnel, including more than  10 NSG commandos and police personnel. Around 450 VIPs of India get this security.

  3. Z category:  It is security comprising of 22 personnel, including around 4-6 NSG commandos and police personnel.

  4. Y+ category: It is security comprising of 11 personnel, including 2-4 commandos and police personnel.

  5. Y category:  It is security comprising of 8 personnel, including 1 or 2 commandos and police personnel.

  6. X category:   It is security comprising of 2 personnel, with no commandos but only armed police personnel.

The Z+ level of security is given by National Security Guard/ Black Cat Commandos commandos. They are armed with Heckler & Koch MP5 sub-machine guns and modern communication equipment. Each member of NSG is highly skilled in martial arts and unarmed combat skills.

 

Security Arrangements during PM Visits

Wherever the Prime Minister goes, the accurate shooters of SPG are placed around each step. These shooters are capable of killing terrorists within a lapse of a second. There are around 3000 soldiers in SPG. They are responsible to provide security to the Prime Minister, ex-Prime Ministers and to their family members as well. These soldiers are trained as per the guidelines of the Secret Service of America. The soldiers of SPG are endowed with FNF-2000 Assault Rifle, Automatic Gun and 17 M revolvers like modern weapons.

On Thursday, The Punjab government created a two-membered high-level committee to probe the alleged security lapses during PM Narendra Modi's visit to Punjab on 5 January 2022. As per the official report issued by the Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi's office, the panel would comprise of the Justice (Retd.) Mehtab Singh Gill and Anurag Verma, the principal secretary of home affairs and justice.
