Combat Heat-Induced Eye Issues: Protect Your Eyes From Redness, Soreness Or Blurred Vision in Summers

Summer Eye Care: Delhi recorded its highest temperature ever on 29 May. With the sweltering summer, we tend to get intense with our summer care because let’s be honest as much as we enjoy the sundresses, tank tops and shorts, the threat of sun heat and ultraviolet rays is equally prominent. While keeping ourselves hydrated, and wearing sunscreen regularly is basic knowledge to many, one part of the face is still largely overlooked. That is the two blinking pairs of lashes responsible for providing us vision, the eyes. So let’s give due consideration to organs that deserve extra care during summer but are often neglected as insignificant.

Why does the eye deserve extra care?

For the unawares, the skin around the eyes is thinner than the rest of it making it an easier target for damage and harm caused by the reckless weather condition and adverse UV rays. Reportedly, five to ten percent of skin cancer occurs on eyelids as they are left unprotected from sun.

Therefore simple yet effective ways to protect your eyes can go a long way and protect you from long-term damage.

How to protect the eyes during extreme heat?

With the scorching temperature, you might have experienced symptoms like redness in eyes, soreness, and even blurred vision in extreme heat or right as you enter indoors after being in the sun. These are some visible symptoms of the harm caused by the humid environment and high temperature.

But do not fret, eye care in summer is easier than you think.

Always Wear Sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses is no more just a fashion statement. They provide a shield to your sensitive eyes by acting as a barrier between your sight and direct sunlight/heat/wind. Your sunglasses should offer protection from UVA and UVB rays of the sun, as their regular exposure can lead to chronic effects like corneal damage, cataracts, macular degeneration, and decreased vision. Moreover, the frama of sunnies should be big enough to cover your eyes adequately with wraparound protection or side protection.

Sunscreen Around The Eyes

This might be a tricky situation for some people as applying sunscreen around the eyes results in irritation and tears. The skin around the eyes is thinnest, so applying sunscreen over the lid and around the eye is essential hence opt for a mineral based sunscreen as it does not mess with your eye sensitivity even when you sweat.

Hydration

Hydration is not just needed to keep you cool during summer. It also helps the eyes to produce enough tears by keeping the tear duct well hydrated. So drinking water has more benefits than you think.

Use Artificial Tears and Eye Drops

The cause of dry eyes are many including humid weather, dry winds, or any eye illness. Keeping artificial tears and eye drops handy will make it easier for you to keep you eyes well lubricated.

Treat Your Eye Allergies

If you have any history of eye allergies then seek help from your healthcare provider to not further irritate your eyes with any DIYs or wrong treatment.
