Earlier, in 2018, the state government has approved the renaming of Allahabad and Faizabad divisions as Prayagraj and Ayodhya respectively. The Prayagraj division includes Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Fatehpur and Pratapgarh districts while the Ayodhya division is comprises of Ayodhya, Ambedkarnagar, Sultanpur, Amethi and Barabanki districts.
The Jhansi Railway station was also renamed recently by the UP government after Rani Laxmi Bai. The state government had also received criticism for changing the names of key divisions, districts and railway stations but the government justified the acts by describing them as restoration of older names and corrections of historical distortions.
