Qualcomm and MediaTek: In the market, the two common chipset manufacturers are Qualcomm Inc. and MediaTek Inc. In terms of market share, both companies are dominant players, accounting for over 50% of the smartphone application processor market combined. Qualcomm has its renowned Snapdragon series of chipsets while MediaTek has the featured Helios and expanded Dimensity lineup.
Fundamentally, both SoCs consist of ARM-based CPUs but Qualcomm uses a 5nm process technology for its latest and most advanced Snapdragon 888 powering the premium-tier smartphones. MediaTek chipsets are often cheaper than similar Qualcomm Snapdragon solutions.
Both Snapdragon and MediaTek are multicore processors. MediaTek has started trial production of its 12 core chipset. However, we should know that it’s less important how many cores the processor has, and more what cores are doing. In terms of performance, the Qualcomm Snapdragon has better performance in multi-tasking, handling heavy and intensive tasks, and gaming. Whereas, MediaTek’s processors are solid performing and their extra core processors enable rigorous and heavy task performing and they are good at multitasking.
