Corporate Celebrations: The recent fete organized at various corporate environs piqued the curiosity on the impact of corporate celebration on the office culture, and peer relationships. The newly erected stalls, decorations, and lighting do provide a breath of fresh air to the employees in their daily solemn surroundings, and yet the complaints somewhere manage to peak into the conversations about the decorations becoming a distraction adhering to the sudden temporary change.
Corporations have made it a rule to offer employees recreation in the form of festivities celebrated at the workplace. While on the face of it, the celebration shenanigans might be ridiculed as the ‘only job HR have’, or a ‘temporary lure’ adding further difficulties in concentration, truth be told, these celebrations are playing a profound role for the individuals spending significant 8-9 hours of their life in a cubicle in front of a desktop.
Bridging gaps
Sharing so many hours together, work peers usually end up being one of the few people we end up spending most of our time with. Festivities help in boosting the bond among peers and imbibe a sense of camaraderie. The ice-break sessions are just a preface to these occasions when you get to know the likes, dislikes, talents, and skills of your peers out of making Excel sheets or writing emails.
Bolstering positive corporate culture
Corporates are notorious for flourishing ‘office politics’ and hosting a toxic culture at work. Activities like Valentine’s Day celebrations, and Diwali celebrations, offer a step to create a culture built on mutual respect, tolerance, and acceptance for each other.
Fostering Inclusivity
Gone are the days when a job meant a place where the distance between an employee and manager was the base of the iceberg. Individuals today, want to work in a space that’s vibrant and diverse respecting everyone’s individuality, culture, ideologies, and traditions. The celebration opens a window into the emotions and psychology of each other.
While the positive impacts of these celebrations are numerous, what begs an explanation is the ridiculing of festivities by the employees. Why is that?
A major notion responsible for the mockery of corporate’s efforts at the celebration is the availability of occasion and celebration at the expense of their work hours and performance. While they are given an environment to enjoy, the workload does not lessen, forcing the employee to regret engaging in the revelry as they then have to compensate for enjoying.
There is room for improvement everywhere, but that cannot be the reason to overlook the significance and social responsibility the corporate celebrations hold in the larger picture.
