A class action lawsuit against Twitter for copyright infringement was filed on Wednesday. The labels contend that despite receiving notices to take down the infringing content, the social media business continued to exploit copyrighted music to lengthen users' sessions on the platform.
The action was brought by the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) on behalf of 17 music publishers who work with several artists, such as Taylor Swift, Beyonce, The Weeknd, RUSH, and many more. The lawsuit alleges that Twitter deviated from other social media rivals that adhered to music copyright and obtained the necessary licences and agreements to use the artists' songs. Twitter reportedly does not adhere to the exact standards. Twitter, according to the lawsuit, "instead breeds massive copyright infringement that harms music creators."
Since December 2021, more than 300,000 tweets, according to the NMPA, have violated music copyright. The NMPA claims to have issued Twitter a notification of this violation, which contained thousands of particular links to the offending tweets. For a total of $250 million in damages, the NMPA is demanding that Twitter pay $150,000 for each of the roughly 1,700 songs in question.
