Cannes 2025: The ‘Queen of Cannes’ Aishwarya Rai finally arrived at the French Riviera for the first time at the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. An absolute vision in an ivory saree, and striking red sindoor on her head, Aishwarya left everyone gasping with her statement.
Joining Rai in her boldly representing Indian values and culture was Aditi Rao Hydari, who opted for a vibrant red saree for Cannes look styled with a line of red in her parted hair.
The two actresses have been hailed to be the real representatives of India and Indian values amidst the ongoing battle of the country to fight terrorism rooted in Pakistan.
In light of the recently held Operation Sindoor, the red on their heads became more than a mere Shringar element; it became a statement on India’s strength and resilience amidst it all.
Let’s break down the look of both the actress and the many meanings people have associated with the symbolic sindoor.
The ‘Indian OG’ of Cannes, Aishwarya Rai’s look was much-anticipated since the Cannes film festival had kicked off. On Wednesday, the ‘Devdas’ actress walked the red carpet in a Manish Malhotra look wearing a handwoven Kadwa ivory Handloom Banarasi saree with a tissue drape.

For accessories, she went with a contrasting ruby jewelry featuring 500 carats of Mozambique rubies and uncut diamonds encrusted in 18K pure gold.
Her jewels included rings on both hands, earrings, a choker necklace,a diamond necklace, and a multiple-strand ruby necklace, with the statement V ring on the ring finger.
The red vermilion or sindoor she wore, however, looked all the limelight. Many believe that her sindoor was a silent slam to the highly publicised divorce rumours of Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. Hence, her sindoor is a symbol of her peaceful and prosperous married life.
On the political front, the meaning of the sindoor has been decoded as a nod to the Indian delegation set to speak about Operation Sindoor to 33 countries.
Operation Sindoor was India’s response to the Pahalgam Attack in Jammu and Kashmir, taking the lives of 26 people.
Aditi Rao Hydari took the traditional route for day 2 at Cannes. She opted for a vibrant red saree from Indian label Raw Mango with a sleeveless blouse with a square neckline. With a statement choker and earrings, she styled her saree in a neat bun with middle-parted hair.
Standing out in an all-red ensemble of Rao was her simple bindi and vivid sindoor.
Aditi married actor Siddhart in a private ceremony last year. She made a striking statement with the sindoor about her newly married life, with a possible nod to Operation Sindoor.
