The divine power, goddess Durga defeated Mahishasur, a demon blessed to be invincible by the gods, hence only a female deity could end his rule of violence and sins. Devotees of goddess Durga celebrate the nine forms of her over nine days literally meaning ‘Navratri’. Each form or avatar symbolizes different parts of her power, being, and wisdom. 

The festival is marked by a nine-day fasting period from dusk to dawn with prayers performed in the morning and night. The fast observers eat a satvick diet after a day of fasting.
