Nagaland Elects first women MLAs

Hekani Jakhalu, a candidate for the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, stated this in a recent interview before the results of the Nagaland assembly election were made public. "It is sad that Nagaland is the only state where women have not been given a place in the highest decision-making body — the assembly. She is now one of only two female Naga legislators in the state's 70-year history. Jakhalu defeated Azheto Zhimomi of the Lok Janshakti Party by 1536 votes in the Nagaland Dimapur-III election. She is joined by Salhoutuono Kruse, who won the Western Angami constituency by 7 votes over independent contender Keneizhakho Nakhro. 

 

Asian Chess Federation confers D Gukesh with Player of the Year award

The Asian Chess Federation (ACF) has recognised Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh with the Player-of-the-Year award for winning the gold medal in the 44th Chess Olympiad in Mahabalipuram with a record-breaking score of 9/11. Gukesh became the youngest Grandmaster from India to have an Elo rating above 2700 and only the sixth Indian to do so.

 

Sayantan Das Becomes India's 81st Grandmaster

After defeating the opposition at the International Festival des Jeux in Cannes, France, Sayantan Das is named the 81st General Manager of India. Das competed in the tournament's A Group as an IM in search of the 24 FIDE Elo points needed to reach the 2500 level and become India's newest grandmaster. Das defeated former European champion GM Alexander Motylev in the decisive round with a score of 7.5/9 to win the trophy and 1,800 euros. GM Daniel Dartha, a three-time winner in Belgium, finished second with 7/9 and took home 1,200 euros. Marc Andria Maurizzi, the nation's youngest-ever GM, finished third and earned 700 euros despite also scoring 7/9 but falling short of Dardha on tiebreaks.
