Women enlist in Colombia’s army for first time in 25 years
Colombia has permitted women to serve in the armed forces for the first time in 25 years. 1,296 female recruits made up the first batch, which enlisted in February and is currently in training. In Colombia, males between the ages of 18 and 24 are required to serve in the military. In order to maintain bases, safeguard infrastructure, and handle administrative duties, the army heavily relies on the young recruits who sign up for a 12-month term, while its professional soldiers engage drug cartels and rebel organisations. Several of the female participants in the new programme hope it will enable them to develop a career in the military.
